FILE: CASE OVERVIEW

Not the official world.
The human one.

Eyes and ears. I have been both.

What follows is neither a memoir nor a confession. It is something quieter: a collection of impressions gathered over years of travel across the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, and Russia.

Intelligence work does not always announce itself. More often it passes quietly through ordinary places — through railway stations and apartment stairwells, border checkpoints and hotel lobbies, and the late-night kitchens where someone decides, finally, to speak.

"Stories travel differently from people. They cross borders without passports. They change names. They arrive incomplete. Sometimes they return years later with new endings."

Twelve stories. Twelve doors into a world of watchers and listeners, forgers and couriers, deep-cover agents and the people they left behind. Some of these stories began as conversations overheard between two men who assumed no one nearby understood their language. Some began as silences that lasted too long to ignore. Others are inventions — but inventions shaped carefully to fit the spaces left by things that cannot be written directly.

The kind of writing you will find inside.

"The most dangerous spies are not the ones who love another country. They are the ones who have stopped loving their own."

"An asset is not recruited. An asset is allowed to recruit himself, over many meetings, in comfortable chairs, until the moment when he looks up and realises he has already agreed."

About the Author

Portrait of Dario G. Flores

Dario G. Flores is a writer and traveler who has spent years moving through the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, and Russia.

He has sat in cafés where conversations outlasted the coffee, on trains where silence carried more meaning than speech, and on buses where strangers spoke with unexpected precision about things they were not supposed to know. He never refused to listen.

Along the way he collected books that were never meant to travel — manuals bought in flea markets, photocopied pages folded inside envelopes, training notes without authors. He carried them home and translated them slowly, word by word, often without certainty that he understood them at all.

Eyes and Ears is his first collection.
